Writing for Ransom

Would you like to write for Ransom and join our list of great authors? We always welcome unsolicited submissions, so if you are an author whose work fits with the areas we publish in, we’d love to hear from you.

Broadly, we publish books in four distinct areas:

  • fiction and non-fiction for struggling and/or reluctant readers (including quick reads);

  • structured reading programmes (e.g. Book-banded or phonics), for ages four right up to adult;

  • books for professionals working in these areas of literacy; and

  • mainstream Young Adult fiction (through our YA imprint, Raven Books)

If you have an idea for a proposal that you would like to discuss with us before submitting a manuscript, please don’t hesitate to email us. You can either email Jenny Ertle or, if you are specifically proposing a YA title, email raven@ransom.co.uk. This helps us to get an idea about the nature of your submission, and whether it is suitable for us to publish.

Generally, we prefer manuscripts submitted by email, but we will also receive postal submissions, as long as there is a stamped addressed envelope (SAE) enclosed. Of course, we will be able to reply to email submissions more promptly, but if an SAE is provided, we will reply to all postal submissions. Currently however, we do not offer detailed feedback on manuscripts. We do receive a lot of unsolicited manuscripts, so we may not be able to provide an immediate response - but we will do our best not to leave you waiting too long!

When submitting to Ransom, please try to include the following:

  • A current CV, including details of other publications.

  • A synopsis of the work.

  • Some sample chapters (no more than three). Usually the first three chapters are best. If it is a very short MS (e.g. no more than a thousand words or so) then feel free to send the complete MS.

  • Information about the target audience, particular selling points and other relevant points you would like to make.

  • For illustrated books, where you have produced illustrations please send photocopied examples of artwork or sketches – please DO NOT post originals, as we cannot be responsible for lost artwork. It is not necessary to send both art and text; very few authors illustrate their own books and we will expect to find a suitable illustrator.

If your submission meets with the specifications detailed above, please address it to:
