Catch Up Phonics and Book Bands
Ransom offers a number of structured programmes of readers for older pupils with lower reading levels. Each series has been carefully designed to offer reading progression.
These programmes of books follow the same principles for the best way to learn to read english, based on decodable phonics, and the specific criteria of the book band scheme. However, the books take account of the requirements of older pupils for topics and illustrations which reflect their interests and age. In developing these books, we also bear in mind that older pupils will have more knowledge and ability to comprehend a topic, so there is some degree of flexibility built into the books to make them appealing to older pupils, while still providing the reading structure and support they require to develop basic literacy skills.
Goal! (6 to 14 years)
A Phonics programme for engaging reluctant readers. The 48 fiction and non-fiction titles are levelled from Phonics Phases 1 to 5. They cover a range of football-related topics and stories.
The books take into account that older pupils are likely to have a reasonable vocabulary, and although they are priimarily decodable books, they do include high frequency words and topic related vocabulary.

Reading Stars Plus (9 to 14 years)
A structured programme to develop reading skills for ages 9 and above. With three books at each level, the books provide reading progression from Phase 2 of phonics through to Orange Bookband.
The series includes fiction and non-fiction, on a wide range of topics and story genres designed to appeal to older readers. All the books are fully illlustrated.
The top up packs offer progression beyond the main Reading Stars Plus programme, for bands from Turquoise to Lime, taking titles from Reading Stars that are age appropriate for the Reading Stars Plus audience.
Neutron Stars (14 to adult)
A structured programme to develop reading skills for teens and adults. With three books at each level, the books provide reading progression from Phase 2 of phonics through to Orange Bookband.
The series includes fiction and non-fiction, on a wide range of topics and story genres designed to appeal to older readers. All the books are fully illlustrated.
The books in the Neutron Stars series are standard book format with spines to give them a more adult feel.
