Author Profile - Mary Chapman

Author of: Paupers (Cold Fusion series), Danger Money, Hauntings, Virus, Invasion, Gunshots at Dawn and The Phoenix Conspiracy (Shades2.0 series) and Young Blood (Breakouts series),

After studying English at University College London, I did supply teaching for a year, and then a Postgraduate Certificate in Education at the University of Leeds. For several years I taught English in secondary schools. I really enjoyed encouraging young people in their own creative writing. Then I made a career change and trained to be a social worker and later a family therapist. In my careers as teacher, social worker and family therapist I have always been involved with children, young people and their families.

Several years ago in my spare time I started writing stories for children, and sending them to publishers. I have a box file of rejection letters!

However I finally succeeded in 2007 when my first book for reluctant teenage readers was published by Evans. Three more short novels and a short science fiction story were published before Evans closed down and all my books went out of print. But Ransom came to the rescue and republished them in 2013. Since then Ransom have published three more short novels and a short ghost story for reluctant teenage readers.

In 2013 Ransom also published Paupers, an historical novel, for more confident readers of 9 to 12. Last year it was short-listed in the Children’s Books category of the East Anglian Book Awards 2014.

I enjoy writing different kinds of books for readers with different interests, across the genres: science fiction; crime; historical, and ghost stories. I hope what I write engages, stimulates and opens up different worlds for my readers.
