The Jungle Planet

Task: To write a report on an imaginary planet.

Support: The worksheet contains data on two planets that the Starchasers have found. The task is to write a report on one of these planets, based on the data provided. Ensure that students understand the vocabulary used on the checklist. Discuss the features of the two planets described on the worksheet. Note that the information given on the checklist is fairly minimal: discuss what other features the planets may have. Ask the students to choose one of the two planets, give it a name and write a more detailed description of it.

Extension: Write a similar description of planet Earth, as it might be seen by an alien.

The Planet of the Vampires

Task: To demonstrate understanding of the text by identifying whether statements are true or false.

Support: The correct answers are: True – 2, 4, 5, 9, 10; False – 1, 3, 6, 7, 8, 11. For the final activity, students are asked to write two true statements and one false statement about the story. First, explain what a true statement really means i.e. it is a fact about the story, not an opinion about it. These statements could then be used in a class quiz.

Extension: Students could give reasons for their yes/no answers.

The Ultimate Secret

Task: To list the contents of a time capsule and to give reasons for each inclusion.

Support: This activity would be appropriate for a paired/group discussion. The whole group could suggest a more extensive list, with individuals championing a particular item. This could then be narrowed down by voting. A movie could be one option, but it would need to be made clear what it contained. (Would any future visitors to the planet have DVD players?)

Extension: Write an imaginative account of aliens trying to make sense of what is in the time capsule.
