Author Submission Brief: Fluency Series

Ransom is looking for proposals!

We are commissioning a new series of fluency books aimed at readers who have recently completed a phonics programme and are moving into traditional levelled books.

Audience: ages 7–11 (i.e., beginning of year 3 to end of year 6), emerging independent readers, reluctant readers

Key Project Details

We are looking for writers who can write engaging, age-appropriate text to a brief, and collaborate with editorial feedback. Experience writing levelled readers or book-banded books is strongly preferred.

The series hopes to feature a range of formats and topics, including chapter books, fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, poetry, etc. Some will be standalone titles, and others will be part of a series of 3 to 6 books in which any title can be read independently of the others in the series.

Word counts will be determined by the level and format of each individual book/series. Lower-level books will be illustrated, highest level will not; the ratio will fluctuate dependant of reading age, level, and format.

We are looking to commission lower-level books as a priority (similar to orange, turquoise, and purple book bands). Each book will be levelled by us, but a more detailed brief will be supplied, which will include word counts, sentence structures, vocabulary, etc.

Submission Requirements

Please include:

• A short author bio — key details only, including relevant writing or education experience, and details of any published work (if applicable)

• Sample of your writing, or a 1-page story proposal. If your manuscript is ready, send no more than the first 300 words (unless the entire M/S is very short).
