Meet Ofsted’s requirements with Reading Stars Phonics

Preparing for a “deep dive” into how reading is taught at your school?

You’ll be happy to hear that Reading Stars Phonics fully supports the 2019 Ofsted Inspection Framework – and that you can take a closer look at how our programme meets these requirements below.

We hope it gives you peace of mind that Reading Stars Phonics is not only the right programme for children    starting their reading journeys, but the right programme to see you through your Ofsted inspection as well.

How does Reading Stars Phonics support the 2019 Education Inspection Framework?

Ofsted says…

Reading Stars Phonics does!

“The sequence of reading books shows a cumulative progression in phonics knowledge that is matched closely to the school’s phonics programme”

Our readers introduce letters and sounds (and high frequency words) gradually – not with new books just at the end of each phase, but new books at the end of each week, perfectly in step with Letters and Sounds as it unfolds. (Our free poster is a great way to get an overview of this!)

“Children practise their reading from books that match their phonics knowledge”

Because Reading Stars Phonics strictly follows Letters and Sounds on a week-by-week basis, at no time will children meet any letters or sounds that they have not already been taught. Rather, children are always reading books that are fully decodable to them - books that match their phonics knowledge as it gradually develops.

“The ongoing assessment of pupils’ phonics progress is sufficiently frequent and detailed to identity any pupil who is falling behind the programme’s pace. If they do fall behind, targeted support is given immediately”

We offer assessment resources to help you assess children’s phonics progress, including phonics checklists and running reading records for every book (along with instructions on how to use them). These running reading records are a powerful way to identify how a child is progressing - and the weak areas where they need additional support.

“Stories, poems, rhymes and non-fiction are chosen for reading to develop pupils’ vocabulary, language comprehension and love of reading”

Designed to foster a love of reading by offering real and rewarding reading experiences, our books include fiction and non-fiction, as well as a variety of text types (familiar, unfamiliar, rhyme, funny, poignant), all supported by beautiful illustrations and photographs. As for language comprehension? We offer teaching resources that include a guided reading lesson plan for every book. These lesson plans provide opportunities for work in comprehension (as well as punctuation, discussion etc.) and support the reader in acquiring reading skills that go beyond simple decoding.
