Meet Reading Stars Plus Phonics

A set of 12 age appropriate, fully decodable phonics readers to support 9 to 14 year-olds who are still at the early stages of reading.

Tell me more…

Ideal for Catch Up, Reading Stars Plus Phonics offers a range of additional phonics readers to develop the reading skills of older students who have fallen behind with reading.

Informed by 25 years of experience in publishing books for struggling and reluctant readers, these books

cover Letters and Sounds Phases 2 to 5, with three books at each Phase

include a mixture of fiction and non-fiction titles, covering a range of topics and genres

offer diverse stories, topics and illustrations that appeal to older readers, who would otherwise be patronised – and ‘switched off’ – by younger-looking books

A note from editor Steve…

Phonics is a powerful system for
getting people off the starting blocks of reading
– and it can work at any age. Very often, however,
decodable phonics texts mean simple language. And simple language
means a patronising book that will disengage older readers.

I designed Reading Stars Plus to break this pattern. The books take
account of the requirements of older pupils for topics and illustrations
which reflect their interests and age. In developing these books we also
bear in mind older pupils will have more knowledge and ability to
comprehend a topic, so there is some degree of flexibility build into
the books to make them appealing to older pupils, while still
providing the reading structure and support they
require to develop basic literacy skills.

Beyond phonics?

Reading Stars Plus is more than just phonics – the series offers high-low Book Band readers too!

Both a progressive reading programme to further develop reading skills and a host of titles that can be used as individual reads, these books

cover six Book Bands (Pink to Orange, where the need is greatest), with three titles at each Band

also include a mixture of fiction and non-fiction titles, covering a range of topics and genres

also offer stories, topics and illustrations that appeal to older readers, who would otherwise be patronised – and ‘switched off’ – by younger-looking books
