Supporting Adult Literacy with Ransom Titles

Here at Ransom, we’re on a mission to get everyone reading.

That includes teens and adults who are learning to read, or developing basic literacy skills.

Indeed, we pride ourselves on producing quality low-level books that are never patronising in terms of stories, topics and illustrations.

They are designed to develop older readers’ literacy skills – and their love of reading.

Below you can find out a bit more about the books which have made us a firm favourite amongst many adult literacy charities, special schools and prisons.

Which of your series are ideal for adult literacy programmes?

In our range for teens and adults, a number of series offer titles which are ideal for adult literacy programmes:

How do you level your books for adult literacy?

Books for adult literacy are usually levelled in two ways:

SMOG Readability Levels

A measure of how complex a text is to read. The lower the SMOG number, the easier the text is to read. (The lowest possible SMOG score is 9.)

Adult Literacy Levels

Level which were developed by the UK Government in 2001 as part of their Skills for Life strategy. There are three entry levels, followed by Level 1 and Level 2.

Here are the SMOG Levels and Adult Literacy Levels for the series we’ve listed above. (Each image is a downloadable PDF file.)
