Many children and adults are not in the habit of reading. They don’t get on with books: they are reluctant readers. As a result, they have little opportunity to develop their literacy skills – and they lose out as a result.
Others may be keen to read, but (for whatever reason) they find reading difficult. Conventional books for a person of their age might be just too difficult to read. These struggling readers need reading materials that are age-appropriate, but which don’t patronise.
Of course, many readers who struggle are also reluctant.
If you’re working with reluctant or struggling readers, either as a parent or teaching professional, the Encouraging Reluctant Readers FAQ offers essential guidance and contains many useful tips. It's a great place to start.

This year we have included new titles from current favourites such as Boffin Boy and Siti's Sisters, as well as new series. We are also launching a new series for more able readers, plus further titles for literacy professionals.
Ransom is the leading publisher of books for reluctant and struggling readers. Our titles have strong visual appeal (important for poor readers!) and are never patronising. We always show both the interest age and the reading age on our website and in our catalogues, so you can match our books to your readers’ interests and abilities.
Exciting, action-packed stories for those with a love of the unexplained. Originally published in 1998, now reissued by popular demand with updated texts, striking new illustrations and great new covers. More...
A new series that uses the appeal of the performing arts to engage the reader. Gorgeous photos and full-colour illustrations make for an unpatronising read. Following the format of our popular Trailblazers series, each book includes a non-fiction section and a fiction story on the same topic.
